One ring to bind them all: linear and non-linear crystalline WGM resonators from THz to visible

Highqualityopticalresonatorscanstorelightandthusenhancetheopticalfieldswithintheresonatorbymanyordersofmagnitude.Highinternalfieldintensitiesallowforefficientnonlinearprocessesandnarrowlinewidthresonancesareidealforprecisesensingapplications.AparticularlyinterestingresonatoristheWhispering-Gallery-Moderesonator,whichconfineslightbasedontheprincipleoftotal-internal-reflectioninanazimuthally-symmetricdielectric.Crystallinematerialsfeaturelowmaterialabsorptionaswellashighopticalnonlinearities,includingsecondordernonlinearities.IwillpresentMgF2resonatorsforbulk-indexsensingandshowhowhighlynonlinearLiNbO3resonatorscanefficientlyconvertmicrowavesintoopticalradiationHaraldG.L.SchwefelreceivedhisPh.D.intheoreticalphysicsfromYaleUniversityin2004.HehassinceworkedasapostdoctoralassociateatYaleandinJapan.AttheUniversityofErlangen-Nuremberghecompletedhishabilitationonthetopicof“crystallinewhisperinggallerymoderesonators”.CurrentlyheisagroupleaderofanexperimentalgroupwithinthedivisionofGerdLeuchsattheMaxPlanckInstitutefortheScienceofLightinErlangen,Germany.InSeptember2015hewillrelocatetothePhysicsDepartmentoftheUniversityofOtagoinDunedin,NewZealandasaseniorlecturerandestablishanindependentresearchgroup.Hiscurrentresearchinterestsarecrystallinewhisperinggallerymoderesonators,whichhestudiesinthemicrowave,THzaswellasintheopticaldomain.Heisespeciallyinterestedinnon-linearopticsandpolarizationwithinsuchresonators.
